Plus how to show off your product the right way
Hey — It’s Blake.
Coming fresh off a Disneyland vacation in which my 2-year-old son broke his leg. Not how I thought I’d be spending my Cali time that way, but hey — still got some quality time in!
In this email, we’ll be covering:
A Steve Jobs masterclass in branding
Long-form text on landing pages
Showing off your product
Contextual links
Data skills
+ more
Estimated read time: 4 minutes and 40 seconds
1) Steve Jobs gives us the true meaning of marketing
The leader of the most iconic company of our generation gives us some simple nuggets of truth. And they’ll totally change your perspective on marketing.
Here are some high points:
Marketing is all about values
Communicate core values above all else
Identify what your brand stands for, not what you do
Focus on the benefits of the product, not the features
People won’t remember 99.9% of companies out there
Nike sells shoes, but that’s not what you remember about them
It’s an absolute masterclass on branding in about 6 minutes.
If you wanna watch, just go right here.
2) Whereby’s simple product showcasing
I know this sounds crazy simple, but most people don’t do it:Show your product in action.
Here’s what works with this Whereby example:
Benefits-driven headline
Shows the product activey in use
Integrates humans into the product showcase
Removes objections (no install, no download, no logins, just meetings)
3) Career Karma’s contextual social link
Look, promoting links on social usually hurts more than it helps.
But when you can make the link WAY more contextual to eacah platform, it can go a long way.
Here’s what works about CK’s link tactic:
The link is short and visible
The link is clearly catered to Twitter only
It redirects you to a quiz to further engage the user
4) Profitwell’s appropriate use of longer text
The typical standard (especially in SaaS) is to write the shortest possible copy you can.
But sometimes you have a more complex product. And it needs a little more content to really get the point across.
Here’s why this works well for Profitwell:
Subscription analytics is hard to understand
Longer form text here allows PW to tackle objections
Short text wouldn’t be enough to get users up to speed
Marketers who can tell stories with data always win.
There are 5 key skills you can have to get buy in on a project.
Being able to:
Read data
Sort data
Arrange data
Present data
Turn data into stories
Most people can do numbers 1 - 3.
Presenting can be a tough one, but there are a fair amount of us that can do it.
But your ability to do number 5 sets you apart from everyone else.
If you can see the data for what it could be and turn that into a story, you’ll get buy in on any project you want to do.
